“I learn best by doing,” says the youngest Productoo team member, 16-year-old Marcel

Marcel is a high school student who likes computer games and plays baseball. And he’s also the newest addition to the software development team of Productoo. At just 16 years old, he decided to get a head start in his career and arranged for an internship at our company. This is what makes him different from his classmates. As Marcel says, most of them don’t really think about what they would like to do in their lives.

What makes a 16-year-old boy decide to spend summer holidays at work?

I wanted to get a summer job and since I study information technologies, I thought getting some actual experience in my field would be a great advantage.

Did you always want to study IT?

Yes. I’ve been interested in computers since I was little. I often played games with my dad, and when I was at basic school, I created my first website.

How did you find out about Productoo?

My school cooperates with companies in the region so that students can get better preparation for their future jobs. Earlier this year, I met two guys from Productoo at an event my school organized and then I got in touch with the development team leader. That’s how it all started.

What were your expectations?

I didn’t really know what to expect, this is my first work experience. Basically I thought I would just come to the office, sit and work at the computer and go home. I couldn’t imagine how challenging the work would be sometimes, how many things I’d have to learn and how hard I’d have to think. But I love it when I manage to solve something. And I didn’t expect I’d feel like I’m actually part of the team – since I’m not a full-time employee. But I really feel welcome and included. Everybody’s very friendly. I also participate in team meetings so I get to see how everything works, how decisions are made. That’s great.

Can you describe your tasks at the beginning of your work experience and now? Has it changed?

I specialize in front end. I work closely with one of the senior developers. At the beginning, he gave me simple tasks so I could learn the basics, and we often discussed everything. Then I started working on tasks that are part of actual projects. During the summer holidays, I was able to spend more time at work, which helped me a lot.

What do you enjoy about your work the most?

That I can see results very quickly. That’s great motivation. And I’m happy that I’m learning a lot of new things and making progress. I don’t have to ask so many questions anymore.

Have you developed any other skills besides programming?

Teamwork. The development team is great and I enjoy working with them.

You are a high school student, so learning is something you do on a daily basis. How do you learn? What do you think is the most effective way?

I learn best by doing. Of course sometimes I need to study something first, but then I need to get my hands on it. That applies not just to programming but also for example English. At school, we don’t just learn grammar rules but we do a lot of speaking practise. I like that. Travelling is also great for learning a foreign language. I’ve been to the USA twice for baseball tournaments and I got the chance to use English in real situations. That’s the best way.

Marcel is a great baseball player.

I can imagine you spend a lot of time at the computer. You also play baseball. Do you have time for anything else?

Yes. My big hobby is the universe. I like reading books and watching movies and documentaries about it. My favourite movie is Interstellar.

Do you follow news about space exploration? What do you think about it?

We’re looking for new planets to live on – such as Mars. But I think we should take better care of our planet first. A lot of people think it’s not necessary – but it is, because it will affect their children. Our future.

Speaking of future, what are your plans? What would you like to do after graduation? You still have a few years to think about it.

I want to go to university, I think education is important. I don’t know exactly what I will study because there are a lot of possibilities in the IT field. But I hope that the work experience I’m getting at Productoo will also help me decide about my future specialization.

Marcel, we’re excited to have you on board and to be able to support you in such an important phase of your life!
